Tha bullet from a small caliber pistol struck ridge lust evar the right eye and left tho scalp Shade Aldridge, salesman for the Lenoir Auto Parts in Kinston, narrowly escaped death Sunday night In an unusual pistol assault in New Bern, y Aldridge gives the following ac count of what happened: In the James City area he and George Howard were returning to Kinston after a day in the, Morehead City vicinity. Howard was driving. From a side road a car with two negro men suddenly dashed into their oar’s path and Howard had to apply brakes sharply to avoid hitting the negroes’ car. Aldridge says he stuck his head out the window and hollered at (the negroes, ‘’That’s the way thfte damned accidents happen”. They followed the negro car on actass Trent River Bridge into New Bern and stopped-at the first red light. While passing the ne gro car its driver said something “which I didn’t understand”, Al dridge recalls. “I told him to ‘shot up’.” Aldridge Slays and then Howard pulled ahead of the negro ear and when they were about 20 yards ahead of the negro they heard a gun shot, or what they thought was a gun shot. 'Aldridge says, be told Howard, “Let’s get out of here”. They made a left turn in an ef fort to get away from the negro car which made the same turn and continued the pursuit. Much to the discomfort of Al dridge and Howard they found they had turned into a dead end street and the only way out was blocked by the negro car. They backed up, trying to get room to run around the negro car and the driver of the negro car kept pinning them further back into the dead end street. Finally when there was no more room to back up, Aldridge says the driver of the negro car jumped out and leveled a pistol in his di rection and as he did, Aldridge fortunately ducked but was still creased by the bullet from the negro’s pistol. With the negro car at a standstill Howard managed to maneuver his ear around and get out while the negro stood still clicking the pistol in their direc-. tion but it was either out of am munition or was misfiring.
